Labor & Delivery Tour

This past Saturday John David and I woke up bright an early because we were going to the hospital where I’ll deliver for a Labor and Delivery tour!

All was well, we made it on time and since it was cold outside and a little chilly in the hospital I kept my wool coat over my shirt & cardigan.

The nurse giving the tour came out and gave us and the 3 other couples a welcome and told us exactly where to go and what to do when we’re in labor. Then we walked through the locked doors and into the labor and delivery wing.

The first room we toured was the triage room where you first go so they make sure you are truly in labor before putting you in a room. Then we were off to see the c-section area (she just opened the doors leading to the operating room and told us what happens in the event of a c-section…all interesting because I had absolutely no clue what happens in the event of a c-section!)

Then we went into a labor and delivery room. It was very nice! She started showing us the computer, monitors that will be monitoring the baby’s heart beat, the IV machine, and going through what happens while you are laboring. Well, I started feeling funny! There was nothing that she said that I didn’t already know that would make me feel sick but I was feeling faint. I took off my wool coat and then sat down in a nearby chair. (And there were 3 other pregnant women in the room so I felt horrible doing that!)

The nurse finally finishes and we walk out of the room. John David kept asking me if I was okay and I kept assuring him I was. I gave him my coat and my purse and figured all would be fine. We decided that it was very hot in the l&d room and walking in the cooler hallway would make me feel better.

We got to the nursery area and then I started feeling really bad. I took off my sweater and leaned against the wall, feeling slightly faint but thinking I’d be okay.

Then it was time to tour the postpartum room. Well, I made it down the hall and to the room. I didn’t go in but instead sat down on the floor outside the room because I was about to pass out (I have a history of passing out…not often but I know the symptoms!)

The nurse saw me sit down and rushed out of the room, leaving the 3 other couples, to get me some ice and a chair. Meanwhile, I am incredibly embarrassed and couldn’t believe this was happening!

The ice helped me cool down quite a bit (and was very good!)

About 2 minutes later, the tour was over and the nurse insisted we come in the room and wait a few minutes before we left so I could fully recover!

Of course I’m thinking, great, I already have a reputation at the hospital! I felt like such a drama queen (which is totally not me) and it really was one of the most embarrassing things that has ever happened to me.

The nurse was very nice and we think the heat is what triggered this “spell” coupled with the reality of actually being at the hospital. Then the fact that I am pregnant and have more blood in my body was probably the reason it took me about 15 minutes to start feeling normal again (typically when I feel faint, it takes a minute or two for me to recover!)

So, that’s the embarrassing story of the month, maybe even of the year! Hopefully my actual trip to the hospital to have Paxton will be much less dramatic and eventful than the “simple” tour of labor and delivery!

Here I am on Saturday!! (After recovering from the humiliation…)

The Ladder

John David and I are both people that need order and organization in our lives! However, we sometimes allow things to go undone for weeks (or even months)! With some things we just tend to procrastinate…really bad! Believe me I could write you a long list of things that we need to do but just keep putting off, but I’ll spare you!

Enter, the ladder:

Why yes, there is a ladder in my closet! John David needed to get in the attic (the entrance is in our closet…lovely!) so he got the ladder out of the basement! Not a big deal, right?

Well, seeing that the ladder has been in our closet since last Saturday…that would be a major fail! Yes, we just walked around the ladder to get our clothes! And after the first day he moved it more to his side so I’d have a little room! How kind of him! (But why didn’t we just move it??)

And, when I ironed Tuesday, I just stepped on the bottom step to hang his pants and shirts up…how convenient!!

I am pleased to say that the ladder has made it out of the closet…it’s now in front of the dresser!! Hmm…at this rate it won’t make it back to the basement for another 3 weeks!

One of Those Weeks

It’s really been one of those weeks! I don’t know if it’s because I’m pregnant or what but I’ve got a list of things to share…

It started Tuesday…as soon as John David left for work I brought a load of laundry down to the basement! (Go me, getting an early start on that laundry!) Well, after cooking for about an hour and a half I went down to get the laundry out of the wash only to find that I never even pressed start! Oops…

Then Wednesday I had a very similar experience! I put my roast the crock-pot and turned it on as I was peeling potatoes and carrots! Once I got all the veggies in, I started to leave the kitchen but realized that I never plugged the crock-pot in! Um…

And let’s not even start on my Wednesday emotions…I’ll just say I completely stressed myself out over attending a dinner, registering for “expectant parent” classes and getting transcribing work! Things that normally would never phase me but really got to me yesterday! Blame that on pregnancy…

And Thursday…

Well, the picture speaks for itself! This is what I woke up to! How do dishes stack up so fast? This is after 2 meals! I just really don’t understand! After my doctor’s appointment today and grocery shopping today, I attacked this mountain of dishes (and was sure to wash my dinner dishes tonight!)

Oh and notice the knobs on the drawers? Yeah, one is missing and has been that way since we bought the house…14 months ago. Maybe one day…

We still have Friday…no telling what crazy thing will happen!

Casserole Mishap

Last night I had one of my biggest kitchen disasters…you know the kind of disaster that makes you want to cry!

Our neighbors had a baby girl on Monday and I wanted to fix them a nice, hot dinner! I even broke out all of the disposable casserole dishes and containers so there would be no clean up on their part! I started cooking around 2:15 because dinner was promised between 5:15-5:30! All was going well for the first 2 hours, the chicken casserole looked beautiful, the brownies baked up perfect and my hash brown casserole looked delicious!

Around 4:30 I put the chicken casserole in the oven because it needed to  bake for 45 minutes. I also pulled the hash brown casserole out of the oven to check its status (those little potatoes seem to take forever to soften.)

Here is where I tell you that since I cooked everything in disposable pans, I was cooking the hash brown casserole in a pie pan, and the pie pan was heaping full of yummy hash brown goodness!

All was well, the hash brown casserole was looking good, so I stuck a piece of foil on the top to keep it from drying out, put on my oven mit and proceeded to put it back in the oven…but that was not to be!

The pie pan gave way and about 1/4 of the casserole plopped down onto the oven door and since the oven door wasn’t completely flat but tilted every so slightly (another bad habit of mine), it proceed to run from the door down, a little into the oven and a lot in the crack between the oven door and oven!

At this point my first thought was to turn off the oven, sit down on the floor, call my husband while crying and ask “what do I do?!?!” However, I realized although it was bad that I just had to make the most of it because this dinner was not for me!

I proceeded to scoop as many hash browns from the mess on the door, in the crack and on the floor. Then I took a wet rag and tried my very best to get as much of the casserole remnants wiped up! After about 10 minutes of the oven door wide open (while still on, I just didn’t have the time to turn it off) I got the huge mess to a reasonable point of cleanliness and was able to proceed with cooking!

The oven (after the initial clean up):

The door, some of the smear towards the top of the door (the right of the picture) is from the clean up process, the actual casserole landed on the bottom corner of the glass and down from there! I think it looks mighty clean considering…

Here is another shot…there was hash brown casserole all in that crack and into the oven too! It was horrible! (And see the nasty inside of the oven too…um…)
So, this was by far my worst kitchen disaster (I think partially due to the fact that I was on a time schedule cooking for another family!) However, I’m sure there are many more left to come! And, I’m just thankful that I did not burn myself while frantically attempting to clean a hot oven!

Now, it’s time to get that oven fully cleaned…
