We've made an iPhone app that let you manage the content of multiple freezers (and move food from one freezer to another).
It also tells you a recommended limit eat date, before the food lost his flavor.
Some screens of this app are here : http://freezer.openium.fr/index.en.html

We got our little chest freezer from my Grandmother, and I cant tell you how much it has saved us! When chicken breasts go on sale - I pick them up for $1.68/lb. Fresh skinless chicken breasts! But my hubby has a 6 month rule - everything needs to be eaten in 6 months. You can start canning baby food next year from the garden which will help save even more!

This is such a good idea! I'd never thought about doing an inventory like that before. I usually end up having a full freezer and forgetting about it because I don't know exactly what's in it. I'm definitely going to do this! Thanks for sharing.

The inventory that I do for my freezer is with an excel spreadsheet and X's for each item in the freezer. This is taped up at the end of the garden season and I black out the X's when I use something.

You are right about a freezer being a major money saver. We have two chest freezers in our basement (1-6ft and 1-4ft). We freeze all our garden surplus (that I don't can) as well as other gardeners surplus at the end of the season. With a family of six the freezers and my fully stocked pantry (along with a price book) have allowed us to average about 250 a month in food. Obviously a smaller family would not need as much space as we do but a freezer is a major consideration inf you are hoping to get your grocery bill as low as possible.

Look for a magnetic white board, I have a calendar that I keep on my fridge with our schedules. I found some wet erase white board markers. They only erase with water, so you could wet your finger and remove a line, or cross them off as you use something then wipe later with a dampened sponge.

Frugal tip - wait to buy the whiteboard and wet erase markers when the office supply stores have one of their bag sales, I find brown paper shopping bags in with the inserts of my Sunday paper several times a year for 15% of everything you can fit in the bag. The markers last quite a while and if you don't use extremely wet sponge or washcloth to erase the board when you want to rewrite things, it will last a long time too. Make sure you dry it well before you use it again.
